Bates College Lifts Shelter-In-Place as Lewiston Police Search for Armed Man

Bates College lifted its shelter-in-place notice Thursday as Lewiston police search for a reported armed man.

Bates College Emergency Management released a statement at 6:12 pm, saying there is no explicit threat on campus, according to police. They said officers searched the area, and the armed man didn’t appear to be nearby.


ORIGINAL STORY:

Students at Bates College in Lewiston were told to shelter-in-place Thursday afternoon due to reports of a man with a gun.

A text message alert sent out Thursday afternoon to students said police were responding to a report of an armed suspect near Central Ave. and Campus Ave.

The message said the suspect is a heavily tattooed man in his mid-30s wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt and black pants.

Lewiston Police said local schools and hospitals were placed in lockdown while they respond.

Police were seen near Union Street searching the area with the help of a dog.

The search was still underway as of 5 p.m.
